Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a physical (or manual) therapy specializing in the treatment of soft tissue pain and injury (including changes in sensation). NMT is innovative in that it combines the best selection of the soft tissue manipulation techniques developed by the last century’s pioneers in osteopathy, chiropractic, naturopathy, and trigger point therapy. Neuromuscular therapy has embraced the orphan tissue fascia and the epidemic that is known widely as trigger points. Janet Travell and David Simons are two physicians who, amongst others, have assisted in our understanding and treatment of trigger points.
It is worth noting that some or all of the pain and changes in sensations attributed to myofascial trigger points may be as a result of secondary hyperalgesia of peripheral neural origin. The quandary here is that trigger points mimic everything from neural pain to headaches.
